You Don’t Need An Information Guru

Monday December 11, 2006 by Bob Burnham

I am probably going to get a lot of flack for this article but hey if you’re not ruffling a few feathers you are probably not being heard. There are two types of business owners in the market place:

1. Business owners who run real day to day, bricks and mortar, employees, trucks etc. businesses.

2. Business owners who sell information to the first group of business owners who often have had no experience in running a day to day business and brand themselves as Gurus.

In most cases the people selling the information are making substantially more money than the people in the trenches. Some of these information Gurus are making millions per year selling their information to struggling business owners and others who want what they have.

First these information marketing Gurus identify an area of pain you are going through in your business and then they write a sales letter detailing how their information product will take away your pain in one magical waving of a wand.

In most cases it won’t be the pain that is eliminated from your day to day business dealings but rather the usually large amount of money that will be extracted from your wallet. In fact the Gurus are getting bolder and bolder each passing year.

Why are these information marketing Gurus getting bolder? Because they can. As long as we business owners are experiencing pain and God only knows how much pain an unconscious business owner can experience, the information Guru’s will keep raising their prices.

I don’t think there is a business owner alive who hasn’t experienced extreme pain. What kind of pain am I talking about? You know the pain you feel when a customer is late in paying you and payroll is due tomorrow. How about the times when your company is busy and a key employee calls in on an already too busy day to say they won’t be in to work today because their grandmother died. Now you have to go out and do his job as well today and you are already committed to other daily meetings.

As you go through your hectic day you try to remember how many times that employee has used the dead grandmother excuse and your blood pressure starts to rise. You then start to think that maybe it is time to replace that employee. That thought is soon replaced with the thoughts about what a tight labor market there is right now and it will be hard to find a replacement as well as all the time you will have to spend interviewing and then training your new employee. More Pain!

We have a nick name for these situations. We affectionately call it the ‘Pain Dome’. I have some business friends tell me what is happening in their company. You know things like how their company is being audited, an employee was caught steeling and one of the company trucks blew up. This is ‘Pain Dome’

The pain, the pain!… please make it go away. What would you pay to make all that pain I have just detailed go away? If I was in pain like this there is probably no limit to what I would pay to make it go away.

Now let me explain that all the above situations are brought about by ourselves making uninformed unconscious choices about our businesses and we have no one to blame but ourselves. There is choice about do we have a business with many employees or no employees.

If we have many employees we should have a passion to work with all different types of people. If you don’t have that passion you might want to consider an alternative to having lots of employees. An accounts receivable is now late and you have payroll the next day. Once again these are all choices you have made. Have you planned for such a situation and what type of customers have you targeted. It will always come down to your beliefs and choices you make.

At ‘What You Focus On Grows’ our whole mission is to communicate to business owners that you create your own reality. Your thoughts become things and those things are of your creation. You and only you have control over those thoughts.

The Gurus have made choices that have put them into a lifestyle they are living. They sell information products for anything from losing weight, making more money, working less you name it and they are ready to sell you it and usually at big profit margins. I say all the power to them. It’s a choice and there is no right or wrong only different outcomes.

Some choices will make you struggle harder, be broker and if you think about it a little more stupid. Other choices will lead to a stress free, high wealth life. It’s all a choice and we are the only ones who can make these choices. If you think about it you can still be a relatively unconscious person living a stress free life by picking a profession that pays more with less stress.

Taken a step further what is a lot of stress to some people isn’t even a blip on their radar screen for others. It’s all in the way you perceive it and remember this fact. You create your own reality. It is an inside job. It is all made up by you so make up a nice life, you’ll live longer.

Does this information the information Gurus sell work? If you buy from a good information product marketer and follow the information it will work in most cases. So why then are so few of us after paying large sums of money not seeing any difference happening in our lives?

The chances of having life changing results are very low and even the information marketers know this. If you went to one of their information product seminars they will tell you results are very poor as to how many people actually improve their live after buying their information products. In fact they in many cases will be the first to tell you that probably not even one in one hundred people who buy their information have any noticeable change in their lives the following year.

First of all nearly 50% of us won’t even open the expensive information package we bought because we are all hyped up at the time we bought it but have now gone back to our lazy fat ass habitual ways of living and thinking.

Another 35% of us have enough gumption to open the package but then when we realize we will have to do something like read a book or listen to a CD we pack it in as well. We put it up on the shelf next to the other get rich quick information we bought last year.

The remaining 15% left read or listen to a little bit more of the information and try it for a while but the fact remains that at the end of the first year almost no one will have any substantial life changing miracles.

Every so often a person will resonate with the information they have bought and use it and it will alter their lives in miraculous ways. Many of these people may even give both the Guru and the information product a testimonial to the fact about how much this information has changed their lives. If the Information Gurus are selling thousands of their information products it doesn’t take long before they may have lots of life changing testimonials even though it is probably less than 1 in a 100 people it will actually make a life changing difference for.

If the Gurus know their results are less than poor how come they continue to sell this information? Two reasons actually:

1. They tend to believe their own bull sh*#/t.
2. They justify it with the fact if they can save just one person from living a broke, stupid, unhealthy or fat life then it is all worth it.

I tend to agree with the second justification because it is worth it if you help one more person to wake up and live a better life.

So how come there is such a low rate of people that is able to take this information and have it change their lives? Well there are a number of reasons and a few are listed as follows:

1. Some people are sick and tired of being sick and tired and it is time to change.
2. Some people are just at the right point in their lives to hear this life changing information
3. Some people have the strong desire at that point in their lives to make the change.
4. Some people have a passion for taking the information that is sold to them so it will be much easier for them to transcend any obstacles they might encounter.

So here is the bottom line.

1. You don’t need a Guru to sell you over priced, over hyped crap but you do need the right information to make your business a success.
2. The business and information you decide to go with you should have a passion for. When you have that passion you will make that business a success regardless of any obstacles and you won’t even consider it work because you love what you do.

You have the choice to choose what ever path you want. Choose wisely because ‘What You Focus on Grows’.
