Subjective Reality in Business

Tuesday January 9, 2007 by Bob Burnham

A friend of mine worked on the security team for the recent visit by the Dali Lama to Canada. The Dali Lama personally met with each person in attendance. My friend said the energy vibrating from this man was truly amazing.

The Dali Lama also gave everyone a prayer scarf and also a small book of information that he personally autographed for each person. I quickly read the small book when it was shown to me at a house party. There was a question in the book that asked:

Q. What is the purpose of life?
A. To be happy!

I asked a few people at the party the question: What is the purpose of life? No one said the answer is to be happy. In fact when I told them the Dali Lama’s answer, most people were surprised. Perhaps it sounded too simple.

There was even one person that argued with me that she couldn’t possibly be happy because of a host of reasons. The sad truth is that as long as she argues that she can’t be happy she will always be unhappy.

Remember, the answer was not the pursuit of happiness it was “to be happy.” I am a firm believer that happiness comes first; we do not seek happiness, we just are happy – or not, in the case of the party guest. Too bad she doesn’t know what we know and that is that we create our own reality.

To understand how we create our own reality, you first need to understand subjective reality. Since I am committed to helping you succeed in business as you do in life, let’s apply the concept of subjective reality to business.

Understanding Subjective Reality

Most of the world operates in the objective reality, where each person is viewed as an individual, each object is separate and apart from the next, and there are finite laws based on science (and others based on religious beliefs).

A person who operates from a subjective reality, or rather, who is aware of his or her subjective reality, does not see themselves as separate from the world around them. In fact, in subjective reality there is no distinction between “her” and “him.” Everything and is connected, and everything is originates from the same source: you.

This is where the concept of subjective reality confuses most people. It can be hard to wrap your brain around this idea because most of us are trained to believe in powers greater than ourselves, such as God, angels, saints and other deities.

We also tend to believe in the power of the wealthy, those who hold high positions in government, banks and institutions, and our parents. Also, many people believe they are powerless over their own addictions to drugs, food, alcohol, gambling and sex.

The realization that everything you see, touch, feel, know, experience, and fear is actually of your own invention can be too difficult to bare. Years of blame, therapy, support groups, failures and successes seem to be folly when you come to know subjective reality.

When you operate in subjective reality, you know that there is only one consciousness, and that you are that consciousness in action. You and everything and everyone around you are the supreme consciousness in experience. Everything is you, and you are everything.

Practical Subjective Reality

People talk about subjective reality every day; they just use different words to describe it. You may have heard the phrases, “the way I see it is…” or “that’s not my reality,” or “from my perspective.” Some of the best films are based on the trouble that ensues when a great misunderstanding has taken place, and one character believes something the other knows not to be true.

Applying this high level of consciousness to business is another matter entirely. At a very basic level, awareness of subjective reality frees you from the confines of labels and limitations. How would you operate your business differently if you did not see yourself as “an up and comer,” for example? Would you try for bigger deals or take on more important work? Would you continue to climb up the “ladder of success” once you realized it did not have to exist for you?

The objective reality is littered with agreements we adhere to, but don’t even remember making. A very simple example is the idea of a college education. While in some fields it is necessary to have a degree in order to pursue a career – doctors and lawyers, for example – the truth is you do not need any college to start your own business. Still we blindly encourage our children to apply for college, and hold ourselves back from moving forward “until we get our degree.”

Subjective reality is not just a concept; it has practical, real-world applications in your every day life. To see for yourself, quickly jot down five things you would do if you had the time. You should have no problem coming up with them in the next ten seconds, because you probably walk around with the guilt and frustration of not having the time for them.

Of course, maybe one or two of the items on your list are things you don’t really want to make time for, but at least a couple of them are things you would dearly love to have time for. The thing is you are operating on so many assumptions when you determine you don’t have the time. Those assumptions are products of the objective world. When you remain in subjective reality, you have all of the time in the world.

Imagine what your life would be like if you were not shackled to the perceptions you currently hold about yourself and the world around you. The positive effects of letting go of objective reality can be overwhelming.

As a business owner, you limit yourself in a myriad of ways when you believe only in objective reality. What could you invent or manifest if you operated fully in subjective reality? Certainly, none of the great inventions of our time would have been created if the great minds behind them had believed in the perceptions of the masses.

You may have read about the most wealthy self-made men and women. Perhaps some of them serve as your inspiration. History and present day is full of examples of people who overcame huge obstacles, pulled themselves up from nothing, or bounced back from seemingly insurmountable tragedy or failure. But did they really?

The truth is, the Oprah Winfrey’s, Henry Ford’s, and Lance Armstrong’s of the world didn’t really overcome anything. They either didn’t see it as an obstacle in the first place, or they didn’t limit the possibilities for a solution. Either way, they were living in a subjective reality more often than they were living in an objective reality.

The Power of Thought

Once you get over the realization that you actually created the life you are living, and the responsibility does not lie with your mother, your boss, or your ex-girlfriend, you are ready to see the infinite possibilities of subjective reality awareness.

How did you create the world around you? It began with a thought. A simple thought about what you perceived at the time became a belief, and you built your whole world around it. You may never know why or when all of your belief systems were created, but you can change them.

What you believe to be true about the world is true for you. So, your thoughts, which are your beliefs, are manifested constantly. In business, this affects your ability to succeed more than anything else. The power of thought is the key to your success.

For example, if somewhere along the way you developed a belief that you would never make more money than your father, then no matter how hard to you try to get past it, you will always have a ceiling on what you earn. Even if you have a particularly great year, and make well over that amount, the belief you hold will manifest unforeseen emergency expenses so that your net profit remains the same.

In many ways, you are your own worst enemy. But you can also be your greatest ally. It is your choice. When you think of your beliefs as a choice you are making, it becomes easier to see the power of them. Of course you would not choose to put a cap on your earning potential. Of course you would not choose to experience a downturn in sales, lose your best employees, or miss important deadlines. A choice is easier to make than a belief is to change.

Don’t Confuse Power Thinking with Wishing

Wishing assumes you don’t have what you want and are waiting for it to come to pass. So does prayer requests, and even setting goals. Remember, what you perceive to be true is true, so if you perceive yourself as not having something, than you will never have it.

Instead, fill your mind with the thoughts you would have if you already had what you are hoping for. Say a prayer of advance gratitude, and focus on what life is like when you have already achieved your goal.

Think of it like this, if you want to take a dream vacation, start by packing your bag. The action assumes you are already booked on the flight, have your hotel reservations, and the funds to get you where you want to go.

The same is true in business. If you are meeting with your staff to discuss how to surpass last year’s sales, structure the meeting around what you will do with the extra revenue. Discuss the impact of the increased inventory and demand. Will you need an intern to help you process all of the orders? Would it be a good idea to switch shipping companies? Who will take a look at storage facilities to store the extra inventory?

When you set these steps in motion, it assumes the goal has already been reached. It shifts your focus away from the need to achieve the goal, which means you are no longer operating in lack consciousness, or your objective reality. Imagine what this shift in perception can do for you and your staff!

A subtle shift in thought can move mountains. Even if you only spend an hour a day in subjective reality awareness, you will notice massive differences in your life and business.
